We Speak English in Barbados (Although Our Grammar is a Bit Shaky)

Don’t you love English translations of signs in non-English-speaking countries? These, from the Sydney Morning Herald, make me laugh:

Mmm, mmm, love that tourist food!

Mmm, mmm, love that tourist food!

I'll take the Tourist Center, please.

Thx for the choice; I think I'll visit the Tourist Center.

I'm sure when you've just gotta go, you understand …

Even though they’re in English, some signs in Barbados are pretty funny, too, particularly for a country with an impressive 99% literacy rate. My favorite is at the Barbados Yacht Club in the ladies’ loo, which says, “Flush After Being Used.” I wonder, are men also told to flush after being used or is this an advisement only to women? And if it is for women only, why the assumption that all women who use the loo at the Yacht Club are of … questionable reputation??
