Cheers, Barbados Turns 44 Today!

Cheers, Barbados Turns 44 Today!

Barbados celebrates her independence from Britain today with a parade at the Garrison, the day off from work, wearing of the colors of the Barbados flag, beach-going, and much discussion over whom the Queen knighted today (congratulations, Sir Branford). Across the island, the mood is mellow and happy.

Aunt Sallie & Uncle Sam

Aunt Sallie represents fertility (and fun!!).

Barbados Food & Wine & Rum Festival

I took these photos at Barbados first annual Food & Wine & Rum Festival that took place in Barbados Nov 19-22. This particular festival event took place at the historic George Washington House. Aunt Sallie & Uncle Sam were in attendance to celebrate Bajan chef Peter Edey and Texas chef Tim Love who were in a spirited (and yummy!) Texas-Bajan cook-off.

George Washington would approve. Happy Birthday, Barbados!

    Hi Jane

I am Greg’s cousin in Australia. He sent me the link to this which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Imagine 44 years since independence. It seems just like yesterday.

I had the reverse experience in going from Barbados at 19 years of age to the UK and later to Minneapolis, Minnesota – boy THAT was cold. Take care. Love Pamie

  5. Pam, hello and greetings from Barbados! I feel I know you from all Greg has shared of childhood memories 🙂 I hope you have a lovely Aussie Christmas. We are going to try to get to Australia for the wedding coming up – happy day – and if we do we’ll love getting together. Thanks for writing, Pam! xox Jane
